Rosie Huntington-Whiteley: Malibu Beach Babe

Getting some much-needed relaxation following her worldwide "Transformers" press efforts, Rosie Huntington Whiteley joined boyfriend Jason Statham at a Fourth of July weekend beach party in Malibu yesterday (July 2).

The 24-year-old English beauty looked completely content as she lounged around on the sandy shoreline and cuddled with her "Transporters" beau during the holiday fete.

During her heavy duty "Transformers" media blitz, Miss Huntington-Whiteley attended numerous premieres while also partaking in multiple magazine cover shoots - including the July 2011 issue of British GQ.

With the behind-the-scenes video available for viewing pleasure above, Rosie made it clear that she's on a mission to give it her all when it comes to making it as a Hollywood actress.

She told the mag, "Would I like even a sniff of Angelina Jolie?s career? Yes. Do I think I have a future in this business? I certainly hope so. And I?m going to work damn hard to make sure I do."

Evan Rachel Wood and ex Jamie Bell reunite

Evan Rachel Wood and Jamie Bell called it quits in 2006 after a year of dating.

Looks like love is in the air in Hollywood.

"True Blood" star Evan Rachel Wood and the original "Billy Elliot", British actor Jamie Bell, were spotted together in New York City on Friday.

The former love birds were seen strolling through city streets wearing similar gray garb, with their arms around each other.

The two actors previously dated for a year in 2006, with Wood and Bell even getting matching "J" tattoos, but the romance eventually fizzled out.

"We had matching tattoos because we knew our love would last for ever," Wood once said. "Trouble is, it didn't, things happened, we split. But I don't regret the tattoo. It reminds me of a great, great period in my life."

But things seem to have changed in the five years since the pair's last romance.

Wood, for one, has finally split from long time beau Marilyn Manson. Her on-again, off-again relationship with the rocker ended with a broken engagement last year.

Now, the actress appears to be singing to a different tune, praising the attributes of non-American men.

"Well, there's something about British men that's very charming and well mannered," she told the Telegraph.

Maybe there's one specific British man Wood is alluding to.

Gwen Stefani packed up the family ? hubby Gavin Rossdale and sons Kingston James McGregor & Zuma Nesta Rock ? for a wee shopping excursion to find shoes for the boys and proved, without even trying, that they are not only the coolest family around ? but they are cooler that any of us will EVER be. Check out the photos below and see what I?m talking about.

He is just three years old but it already appears as if Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale?s son Zuma might have aspirations of a music career.
The adorable toddler looked perfectly at home a she sat behind a drum kit and bashed away during a family shopping trip yesterday. A proud looking Gwen, 41, and Gavin, 45, looked on as their youngest son proved he has rock star qualities just like his famous parents. The mini drum kit was actually situated in a shoe shop in West Hollywood where the doting parents were browsing for new shoes for their growing boys. Other than their love of music, it is clear that Kingston, 5, and Zuma have both been heavily influenced by their famous parents sense of style. Both boys spent time (Read more...)

LAPD's Foothill Station gets a little TLC

A

fter nearly a half-century of public service, the LAPD's Foothill Station in Pacoima is starting to show its age.

Its lobby seats are stained or peeling and those behind the front desk are mismatched or too short for the officers to use. The walls are a shade of green that's reminiscent of a hospital corridor or, as some officers lament, the color of sheriff's deputies' uniforms.

But all that is about to change. Faced with a city budget crisis that makes the chance of improvements all but impossible, about a dozen volunteers are rolling up their sleeves and renovating the station themselves.

"It's really a labor of love," said Capt. Joseph Hiltner, commanding officer of Foothill Division. "We really have a community that appreciates their police department and folks that are donating recognize the fact that under fiscal constraints, we couldn't do it without their help.

"And the officers appreciate it, too," Hiltner said.

After soliciting donations of paint and labor from local businesses, volunteers gave most of the station's walls a fresh coat of white and "LAPD blue."

Some officers, while off-duty, helped knock down a wall in the watch commander's office to open up the space.

Power tools and fasteners cluttered the desk of Senior Lead Officer Michelle

Rodriguez, who for the last several weeks, has used her spare time to lay and glue donated dark blue tile over the scuffed rose-hued flooring.

"Everybody feels good," she said. "And everyone's real happy about it."

The major work on the station is expected to wrap up this week, but the volunteers are already planning additional improvements, said Vicki Burch, co-chair of Foothill's Community Police Advisory Board.

"A nice place to work makes your workforce more productive," said Burch, who would like to see new furniture in the station and the new landscaping outside - in time to celebrate the station's 50th anniversary later this year.

"I want this area to look good, be good, and be a productive area. I don't want to live in Slumville, USA."

Burch, who volunteers for other organizations in the Sun Valley community, has led the effort to solicit donations of goods and services to help spruce up the station.

About 20 businesses have donated construction workers and electricians and items such as desks, a granite countertop and flat-screen monitors to display the day's agenda.

"It's interesting to see how you can get people to do things they never would have thought of doing, or never saw that there was a need for," Burch said.

"I really don't have to lean on them too hard. A little bit of tears do it," she joked.

Regardless of how much work remains to be done, officers are already appreciative of their tidier and brighter digs.

"It's an older station, so any kind of work looks great," said Officer Rodolfo Rocha, who was working in the newly renovated report-writing room, where a new flat-screen was waiting to be wired. "New paint just makes it feel a little different."

The effort the volunteers and donors have put in has been heartwarming, Rodriguez said.

"It's overwhelming," she said. "It restores your faith in people. We deal with a lot of negative things, but I also know there's a lot of really good people out there that are willing to step up and follow through."

Bobbie Ann Mason brings WWII alive in 'Blue Beret'

By Craig Wilson, USA TODAY

Bobbie Ann Mason knows her way around a good story. She has proven that over and over ? in In Country,Nancy Culpepper and her memoir Clear Springs.

Now the PEN/Hemingway Award winner returns with a novel that takes us back to World War II, the Resistance in Nazi-occupied Europe, and the men and women who played out the drama on the world stage. One man in particular.

The novel is based on Mason's father-in-law, Marshall Stone, and his real-life experiences as a gallant, daredevil flyboy who made nine bombing raids over Europe until the fateful day he is brought down, crashing his B-17 into a Belgian farmer's field.

Decades later Stone is forced into retirement ? he flew jumbo jets ? and doesn't know what to do with his life until one day he decides to return to that Belgian field, retracing his war steps. His goal? To reconnect with the Resistance people who helped him survive, especially one young woman, a teenager during the war, who guided him through the back streets of Paris. Yes, the girl in the blue beret.

This is a war story told decades later, helped along by Mason's extensive research in Europe, where she tracked down the real-life heroes herself. Ushering her readers back and forth across the decades, she perfectly weaves history with fiction.

Without giving anything away, let's just say Stone discovers nothing short of amazing revelations about the people who helped him all those years ago, people who risked their lives for him. And along the way Stone discovers a few things about himself.

In many ways the book is a tribute to these unsung civilians whose heroism often was never acknowledged by those they helped.

As for the girl in the blue beret, he discovers her living near Cognac. A widow. She recognizes him immediately and tells him her family took in other aviateurs during the occupation.

"'You remembered me as the girl in the blue beret. ? Is it not so?'" she said. "'But our signals varied. Sometimes I wore a Scottish scarf. One of the aviateurs wrote me and he remembered me as the girl in the red socks!'

"He (Stone) laughed. "'The girl in the red socks. It doesn't have the same ring to it.'"

Indeed it does not. To him she remained the girl in the blue beret, and a good thing, too. It's a perfect title for this near-perfect war story.
